Buying Guide for Spearfishing Guns - Find the right one for your needs

Are you looking for a spear gun and don't know what to look for? Let's see their main characteristics and what you should pay attention to, based on the use you intend to make.

1. Size of the spear gun

Size matters! Find the right size based on the use you want to make of it.

Short (<80 cm): Suitable for murky waters & fishing on rocks.

Medium (81 - 110 cm): Suitable for visibility up to 10m & depth of 5-6m.

Long (>111 cm): Suitable for deep waters, greater freedom of movement & larger fish species.

2. Type of spear gun

Based on their operation, there are 3 types of spear guns.

Rubber band gun

This is the most classic type of spear gun that uses rubber bands to propel the spear. The rubber bands are stretched, and when released, they generate the power needed to launch it.

#SkroutzTip In the initial uses, it may be more difficult to load, as the rubber bands will be tighter. However, over time, they soften and wear out.

Pneumatic gun

This type of spear gun uses air pressure to launch the spear. Pneumatic guns usually offer greater accuracy and are easier to maintain.

Spring-loaded gun

Spring-loaded spear guns use a spring to launch the spear. They are usually more affordable, smaller, and suitable for beginners or for use in shallow waters.

3. Type of rubber band gun

Simple

Mainly used for fishing in shallow waters. Most of the time, it has a single rubber band that extends from the handle to the spear. It is usually cheaper and easier to use.

With reel

These spear guns are equipped with a mechanism that includes a cable or line wrapped around a spool. This cable can be used to store the spear or to assist in fishing larger fish. The reel allows you to adjust the depth of the spear and reduce the fish's resistance.

4. Material

Another important feature is the choice of material for the body of the spear gun. Most are made of aluminum or carbon. Aluminum is lightweight and durable, while carbon is even lighter, more corrosion-resistant, and has good buoyancy in water.

Are you a beginner?

Choose an easy-to-use spear gun, with a length of about 70 centimeters, suitable for fishing in rocky areas and shallow waters, as you have just started. It can be either a rubber gun, which is the most classic and has a wide variety, or a spring gun, which is easy to use!

Are you an amateur?

We would suggest choosing a medium-length spear gun, that is from 80cm to 110cm, in order to be able to aim at a depth of 5-6m. It could also be either a rubber gun or a pneumatic gun.

Are you more than an amateur?

If spearfishing is a habit in your everyday life and you want to fish... in deep waters and target larger fish species, then we would suggest choosing a long spear gun with a reel. Its material could be carbon, which makes it lightweight, resistant to corrosion, and buoyant in water.

Don't forget! Many times there may be a difference in a product, based on its overall characteristics and construction. Before you decide, read the reviews of other users to see their opinion as well!
