Demosthenes Kalendis, a lawyer on the margins, is called upon to defend the perpetrator of a heinous murder: Fotis Hatzis, Vice President of the party of the official opposition, shoots "in cold blood and publicly" the President of his party, Themistocles Panagos, killing him.

Beyond the faces of the perpetrator and the victim, the reason why the murder particularly concerns the Greek public opinion is the timing of its execution: It takes place just a few months before the parliamentary elections, which according to all polls are predicted to be victorious for the party of the official opposition. "He had to die," is the only statement the perpetrator makes to the police when he is arrested red-handed at the scene of the crime.
