Description

When the 25th centenary of the founding of the city was celebrated for the first time in 1899, the Greek community numbered about a thousand inhabitants, dozens of prosperous commercial houses, several shipowners and a few banking establishments. The participation of the Greeks in the city's huge mobilization for the celebration was significant, as it symbolized the meeting of the past with the present: the "Phocaean Greeks" lived in the city of Marseille, history gave flesh and bones to the myth. While the myth is still alive and known to every student in Marseille, the history of the Greek communities of the 19th and 20th centuries remains largely unknown. This work does not claim to fill this gap, for the simple reason that the lack of historical education and historical consciousness, which aims at improving living conditions, requires collective effort, armed with organization, perseverance, and patience. However, because in the academic teacher the stimuli for reflection and further research are not given only by research itself and books, but mainly by teaching, its gaps and the response of students, this work hopes to enrich the small laboratory of collectivity that is academic lectures.
