Description

This work is an attempt to examine the life and contribution to the science of history of Edward Gibbon (1737-1794). The English historian is inseparably connected with the study of the history of medieval Hellenism. With his ideological positions and the gigantic analytical effort he made, and its voluminous result, he directly influenced the development of Byzantine studies in his time, and until the first decades of the nineteenth century.

In studying his life and scientific contribution, it should not be forgotten that the English historian was a true child of the Enlightenment and the ideas that emerged from the cosmogony of that era. He is a derivative of his immediate political and ideological environment, whose positions and principles he reflects.

And of course, in conclusion, we must not forget that, many times, the historian, in his effort to support the structure he composes, consciously or unconsciously, is influenced and guided, in addition to his personality, by the reality and needs of his time, as he perceives them.
