Generally, with vitamin D, we want not only to get out of deficient levels or to maintain within the limits of insufficiency, but to have those levels with which our body can function optimally. It is good to be above 40 ng/mL. To reach there and maintain those levels, 4,000 IU is a good dosage.

My endocrinologist recommended it to me after tests showed very low vitamin D levels. The "loading dose" was 3 capsules of 4000 IU each, and my vitamin D levels reached normal levels (48) in just 10 days. Gradually, I reduced it to 1 or 2 capsules depending on sun exposure. Now, during pregnancy, with 2 capsules daily, I have vitamin D levels above 70, so I reduced the dosage to 1 capsule, always in combination with vitamin K2 for better calcium absorption.
