Description

Konstantinos Karnazis returns to the land of his ancestors and composes three different stories in a unique narrative. He seeks his Greek roots, with the assistance of top academics, he searches for the traces of the original route traveled by Pheidippides and completes his "mission" by running in the world's most important endurance race, the Spartathlon.

Karnazis delves into the historical events of the time of Pheidippides and pays tribute to the messenger, highlighting his superhuman feat. In his effort to enter the mind and body of his hero, he runs the 245 kilometers of the Spartathlon route, consuming only foods that he could have had at his disposal in 490 BC (figs, olives, sesame bars, smoked meat, and water).

"The Road to Sparta" offers an insightful look into the mindset and motivations that Karnazis employs during the most difficult and personal challenge of his life (until now). The stories of the people and places he encounters alternate with the emotional, spiritual, and physical difficulties he must face to reach the finish line. His inspiring (peri)description will surely captivate and inspire readers, whether they run long distances or not run at all.

Reviews

  • It failed to captivate me, so I couldn't read it with interest.
It can't inspire... at least not me in the slightest. I prefer humble runners.

  • Amazing book that not only talks about running but also includes very beautiful historical elements through a nice narration. The only negative thing I found is that the author repeats things he has already said in another book titled "Ultramarathon Runner". Overall, it is worth reading for anyone, whether they are involved in running or not.
