"Somnium Scipionis" by Cicero is one of the most beautiful philosophical texts in world literature. The protagonist Scipio Aemilianus sees in a vision his grandfather, the famous general Scipio Africanus the Elder, whose ghost prophesies future achievements and the murder of his grandson, while also revealing to him the secrets of the afterlife and happiness. It then touches on issues such as suicide, the divine origin of the soul, the habitation of the galaxy by virtuous deceased, the planetary system of the nine spheres, cosmic harmony, as well as the small size of the Earth and humans in relation to the infinite universe. The moral lesson: man must gaze at the heavens and despise earthly things and their vain glory.
