Description

Publishers and printers, writers and translators, supporters and opponents of the Enlightenment, the Greek printing houses of Venice, the Patriarchal Printing House of Constantinople, and also: subscriptions and subscribers, circulation, bibliographic issues (with the great work of Emile Legrand dominating), the reading public and the types of books, from popular leaflets and religious publications to modern scientific books: Through the pages of this volume, a whole world emerges, largely unknown and fascinating, not only for researchers but also for book lovers and bibliophiles.

The work was designed by Filippos Iliou himself; the title is his own. The volume, edited by Anna Mathaiou, Stratis Bournazos, and Popi Polemi, collects small and larger texts related to the Greek book - most of them difficult to access and find. Some have been reworked by the author himself, and others are in their original form (the author did not have time to complete, as he wished, this new edition). However, the studies in this volume clearly outline a social history of the Greek book and the Greek-speaking reading public from the Ottoman Empire to the 19th century, with an emphasis on detail and the synthetic skill that characterize the author's entire work. The bibliography and history of the Greek book were one of Filippos Iliou's main areas of research. And his contribution to the expansion of our knowledge, as well as our research horizons, in this field was so decisive that it is impossible today to talk about the history of the Greek book and reading without mentioning his work.
