This project focuses on Criminology and Penology. The issues of criminalization, sanctions, and the way of dealing with and treating offenders have concerned all organized societies and are the subject of both theoretical engagement and practical application. Today, the penitentiary system occupies a dominant position not only in scientific but also in political discourse, mainly due to the acute impasses that the institution of prison has been led to and the emerging trend of implementing repressive policies, which often lead to violations of rights, even in democratic states.

At the beginning of the project, criminal sanctions are examined (the "criminalization" of behaviors, historical evolution, evolution in the Greek context), social reaction against the criminal and anti-crime policy, the latest trends in penology, the criminal as an "object of treatment" and the institution of prison. Subsequently, the penitentiary systems are analyzed (community system, isolation or Pennsylvania system, mixed or Auburn system, progressive or Irish system), the evolution and organization system of Greek prisons, the rehabilitation of convicts (closed environment - consequences of confinement, open environment), pretrial detention, control of the penitentiary system, the issue of privatization, alternative ways of serving custodial sentences (community service, house arrest with electronic monitoring), and post-penitentiary assistance.

The project concludes with the author's conclusions, extensive bibliography, and an appendix of legislative texts.
