From the books that will always provoke discussions and controversies, "The Prince" by the Italian diplomat, historian, philosopher - and true child of the Renaissance - Niccolò Machiavelli is a work that has influenced and shaped Western political thought and science to a great extent. And although in most languages the adjective "Machiavellian" means unequivocally "cunning" and "unscrupulous", the elements that stand out here, beyond the given and timeless "disregard" for ethics in the race for power and authority, are nothing but pure logical thinking and an undeniable progressivism both in the political and historical perception of things (secularization against the theocratic views of the Middle Ages) and in the necessary means to achieve it (leadership abilities and favorable circumstances - occasione - for drastic human intervention in the "natural order"). Beyond the exceptionally penetrating insights into the thinking and actions of the rulers, Machiavelli's "The Prince" radiographs the human being himself as a political entity, with a depth much less "Machiavellian" than we might think.
