Description

The speakers Oberon 1 from the company Dali Characterized as bookshelf speakers because they are placed on a shelf or special base, which is sold separately. In this category usually belong the main speakers of a sound system, but due to their small size they can also be used as peripherals for better sound simulation. The power and impedance of them are 100W RMS and 6Ω respectively, which means they can be connected to an amplifier with the corresponding characteristics. This is a speaker 2 way, meaning the sound frequencies are reproduced by two speakers, one tweeter for the high frequencies and one woofer for the low frequencies.

This review is about the colour: Beige

The speaker has been quite well set up so the conclusions are as follows: the "s" that sounds like "th" only exists when it is in the recording, simply so bright and up front that it is with such an enthusiastic tweeter (which, to tell the truth, puts the woofer a bit in the background, i.e. if, at least, it played a bit lower it would be different and more balanced in its sound character - anyway it is obvious that the company wanted this sound), it reveals much more than other speakers and you have to accept it, because, anyway, the speaker does not forgive and does not hide it at all - but still, generally, it has a little (or even more than a little) sibilance and you should take that into consideration (here I will also say that I do not understand the reviews that talk about "tonally, nicely judged speakers with sweet treble that has still plenty of bite", something that I do not see to be true - the speaker certainly has musicality and melodicity, but it is not sweet and forgiving but lively, nervous and revealing and does not come easily). Sometimes I played it without activating the source direct of the amplifier, which was an alternative to play it softer (and it really worked, try it), but at the same time I realized that the sound was somehow altered and I was losing in clarity, liveliness, information perhaps, but especially in tonality.
Of course, you should know that with the right cable everything can be adjusted to our liking, as I did with some boston cs 26 mk II (yes, I have those too), which had very sharp treble and made the "s" sound like "th", and everything disappeared with another (softer) cable and the speaker plays wonderfully and I would say that its sound is one of the best, i.e. it matters with what you play each speaker (machines, cables etc. - after all, sound in hi-fi is largely a matter of matching).
Anyway, generally, this speaker is a category by itself. I do not know if there is anything similar on the market.
Now I have returned to the spektor 2, and on one hand my ear was pleased, on the other hand I will miss this tremendous clarity and revealing sound of the oberon, and the funny thing is that the spektor, which seemed very bright to me, in comparison to the oberon is not bright at all, but in comparison to other speakers it is certainly brighter. On one hand, I went to something wonderful and more relaxed, on the other hand I lost this otherworldly clarity and sound revelation.
So if you want dali, for a good budget small speaker, choose and take the wonderful spektor 2 which, among other things, does not tire you at all, is more bass-heavy and full and is also easy to match, but at the price it has now they are definitely stealing from you because it is much cheaper in reality or the more expensive (i.e. of another price category) oberon 1 with its unique liveliness, and the sparkling, crystal-clear clarity and sharpness, but which tends to emphasize the "s" if not combined with, at least, the right cables to calm down this overenthusiasm, if that is a problem for you of course, because it may also excite you. The only other speaker that comes to mind, from those I have tried - which really deserves it -, in the price category of the oberon 1, but much larger in volume, is the outstanding q 3030i (another speaker of course with more volume and bass, but also a completely different approach to sound).
Since I read in the review of another friend buyer that there is more "th" than "s", I decided to pay more attention and indeed I noticed this in several cases. Since no review mentioned this, I decided to investigate and I listened to specific pieces, in comparison, from another speaker and from the Oberon. Ultimately, I think that what is heard in the Oberon exists in the recording, but in other speakers, less revealing and bright, it is not so noticeable and even though it exists, you pass it off as "not a big deal" (however, I found a piece where in the other speaker the "s" sounded better, it had a peak that changed it from "th", while in the Oberon this peak was not present). Perhaps this brightness in the mid-highs, the accuracy and the revealing nature of the Oberon make it more noticeable or maybe something else, I don't know at the moment. That is, the Oberon may not be so forgiving and you hear everything. WHEN THERE IS NO (or almost no) DEVIATION OF "s" TOWARDS "th" IN THIS RECORDING, THE Oberon DOES NOT GIVE IT IN THE SOUND AND IT SOUNDS PERFECT (however, it does have a tendency for sibilance at the moment - I don't know if it will decrease or disappear later - for me, even if it exists, it's not a big deal, the world is not lost). So I will wait for the speaker to settle well, for the drivers to fully "break in", maybe this phenomenon will soften and the speaker will become more forgiving, because there is nothing else you can say about this amazing little speaker, which when fed with good recordings (and not only) and from good equipment, you can't believe your ears. Personally, I am definitely interested in a speaker that does not expose too many flaws in recordings, even if it is the best in the world. So let the speaker settle completely and let's see it again, but if it remains it will be disappointing, because otherwise the sound is crystal clear and the speaker is a little wonder that "nails" you to the music, you don't just watch it as an observer. Also, congratulations to Spyros G. who noticed and mentioned it. I didn't pay much attention at first because I thought that with the speaker still tight, surely the sound would be tight too and it was too early to notice every detail, e.g. for me to like the highs of the Spektor 2 it took a lot of listening time, so for how good and extended the highs of the Oberon are, I will let time pass to decide - however, I think I disagree with Spyros G. on something, I believe that the tweeter has a bit more "metal" than I would like, it is very enthusiastic and although it contributes a lot to the fun factor (each listening is a live experience, it's like an "Indiana Jones" adventure, with a dose of exaggeration of course) it needs to relax a bit to make things even better (and it may be quite responsible for the issue with the "s").

I couldn't resist the temptation and bought them even though I had promised myself I wouldn't buy another speaker. I got them for around 352 euros, one of the lowest prices that occasionally appears in the market. I don't think I will write too many words (although in the end I didn't avoid it). Straight out of the box, without breaking in, you get shocked. Here the phrase "crystal clear sound" really makes sense. Unreal clarity, transparency, and detail.
For their size, they have good bass (meaning, they don't leave you unsatisfied, without of course being able to defy the laws of physics and without Dali insisting on producing as much bass as possible from such a small speaker, but who cares about that with such sound), the high frequencies are wonderful and I have left out the midrange, which, as usual for Dali, is bright and stunning, with an amazing sound color, beyond any criticism, and overall their sound makes the sound of other speakers seem colorless, "black and white" and indifferent.
Everything is so clear, crystalline, with clear boundaries and the space they occupy, with excellent placement in the room and a three-dimensional sensation that leaves no room for any complaint.
They are definitely in a different category from the amazing Spector 2, which I will once again say are being sold at an unacceptable price now, and the only thing left for me to understand is which one has more emotion in the sound (meaning the emotional element, something in which I think the Spector 2 are unbeatable), something I am too lazy to do now (but I will do it sometime, as usual, with "Hard to Thrill" from the album "The Road to Escondido" by the collaboration of J.J. Cale and Eric Clapton).
The only objection is their cover, which is not a frame with a cloth, but a single cover with honeycomb-like holes in front of the speakers, something that I consider to round off and somewhat block the sound, and it is not magnetic to be easily removed and repositioned.
Ultimately, the sound magazines that have tested them are absolutely right in considering them to be clearly above their category.
For me, a small (due to size) miracle. Unbelievable. Speakers that truly connect the listener with the music, conveying its message. You forget everything and just listen.
They are not something you generally appreciate and like, they are something that your relationship with them is a relationship of love, adoration.
This is the second time I am writing this after the Spector 2, which, however, despite being clearly of lower category and having their weaknesses, for example, a bit too much in the upper-mid to lower-high frequencies and generally not having the incredible clarity and precision that is on another level, the balance, the homogeneity, the coherence, and the air of superiority of the Oberon, where nothing is anything less than exceptional, maybe you can love them more because they have their weaknesses, they are more mortal (and certainly more forgiving - a very serious thing, while in our case "nothing is hidden under the Oberon" that will reveal everything to you) and many times you love something more that has its weaknesses than something perfect.
At the moment, I am a bit obsessed with the Oberon, but definitely, probably soon, the time will come when I will remember the amazing Spector, which may prove to be more relaxed, and it doesn't mean that I forgot about them because I got the Oberon.

When I received them, I expected the courier to bring me the other box, with the second speaker. There was no second box! Both speakers were packaged in this small box! They are such small speakers! And while you would expect speakers of this size to lack in low-frequency reproduction, their bass is incredibly extensive for their size. That was the second surprise! They also impress with their ability to disappear from the listening space and produce three-dimensional sound that extends beyond the dimensions defined by their placement. The room fills with musical instruments and voices. The midrange is not forward or bright, it is presented with just the right amount of body. The unpleasant surprise is the higher frequencies, which are overly rounded and lacking in some recordings. They are poor in both quality and extension. More plastic than metallic. More "th" than "s". However, some things justify their low purchase price. Average highs and imperfect finish are, in my opinion, their only drawbacks. Their lows, the quality of their speakers, their effortless placement even when hung on the wall, and the three-dimensional sound reproduction are characteristics of higher-priced speakers. With a small compromise in the aforementioned areas, their purchase is considered excellent. Even if they had double the cost, I would still consider them a good purchase. I highly recommend them! Excellent clarity, very good with voices, they require good bases. Somewhat pronounced highs but not annoyingly so. They play 25cm away from the wall, with Denon PMA 1510, Marantz CD 6006 with DAC Chord 2Qute. Purchase price was 250€

It could cost much more! Solid construction, high-quality finish, and connectors with the screen! Crystal clear sound with top-notch midrange and treble. Bass as needed, and an amazing guitar, you feel like they are right next to you! Loudness & Source Direct On. (Not always, of course) The speakers play with the Denon PMA-520 and the real cable spvim250.... Perfect combination of these 3!
