Better call quality and better construction compared to the popular Baofeng UV5R, as well as slightly longer range, but it does not have the variety of accessories that Baofeng has, nor compatibility with CHIRP for those who want it. I'm not even comparing it to a simple PMR walkie talkie, but of course, this one requires a license to be legal.

For use in the mountains - even with small hills in between - between cars, in buildings with multiple floors, or in a residential area within a distance of up to 2 km where you want to stay in contact with your group without any problems, it will cover you. I haven't tested it for more demanding situations or for coverage over very long distances, over 2-3 km, so I don't have an opinion on that. -edit: with two of these devices, I had stable and high-quality communication over a straight distance of about three kilometers (and a much longer road distance) despite interference from large mountain ranges in a forested area, something that was repeated every time I tried it- With this performance, it covers my needs for the mentioned use, as it comes from the factory without exceeding the limitations set by physics, so there is no need to install a larger antenna that would hinder my activities.

The synchronization on two channels simultaneously is particularly convenient, where you can speak independently with two different users or have a specific group channel on standby if you need help, etc.

Although this specific model is manufactured by Quansheng (UV-R50), I preferred it over the other one because of the excellent customer service of Midland. Without having tested its pre-programmed memories, to communicate on the channels of conventional PMR, you will need to program the frequencies either through the menu (a bit complicated for beginners) or via PC using the corresponding cable and software. Personally, I requested and had it programmed by the excellent store from which I purchased it.

Is there anything missing that I would like? Yes, waterproofing for use in the snow, but the problem can be mitigated with a case and proper placement. Also, the speaker sound does not completely close unless you turn off the device, so for such cases, headphones are needed, at least they can be found cheaply in the market.

For its price, it's worth a 5, and in the meantime, I'm keeping an eye on it in case something comes up in the long run, and I will update if necessary.

edit 1/22: It's been through black dogs, snow, and water, and it still works perfectly, and the batteries last just like in the beginning, even though they remained discharged for many months due to quarantine. One of my best purchases.
