The object of the book "The cultural policy of Local Authorities as a factor of regional and social development: The case of the Municipality of Xanthi" is the study of the organization of cultural activities of Local Authorities, highlighting events, changes, and reflections on cultural issues with social, economic, political, spatial, and regional dimensions. Specifically, the book examines the cultural policy of Local Authorities of the first and second degree and its role in social and regional development, as it emerges in a Municipality in Northern Greece, in Thrace, the Municipality of Xanthi. It is an area with multicultural characteristics where popular cultural expressions not only survive but are integral elements of the residents' lives. The purpose of the handbook is to highlight the economic, social, political, and regional dimensions of cultural issues. Specifically, it comprehensively approaches the examination of sustainable regional development and urban revitalization, the European experience, the research of the cultural policy of the Municipality of Xanthi, and the exploration of useful action tools. This is an original study, conducted for the first time for a Greek Municipality. It is based on the application of the UNESCO statistical measurement model. In the context of the research, the author utilized the tools of qualitative and quantitative analysis, the principles of the science of social policy, regional development, communication, cultural studies, as well as the relevant literature. The study is structured in three parts. The first part presents the theoretical framework. The author examines the basic concepts, focuses on the economy of culture, analyzes the regional development policies of Greece and the European Union, as well as the implementation of regional cultural policy in our country, highlighting the relevant studies at the international level. The second part develops the cultural policy of the Municipality of Xanthi. The author refers to the objectives and methodology of the empirical research, studies the specific characteristics of Xanthi, analyzes the cultural policy, the environment, and the overall cultural image of the region. Of particular interest is the on-site research conducted by the author on the cultural activities of the Municipality of Xanthi, reflecting their impact in relation to the empirical results and the statistical basis of UNESCO. The third part presents proposals and tools for a successful cultural policy by the Municipality of Xanthi and formulates the conclusions of the research from the analysis of a Greek Municipality. At the end of the work, a wealth of useful appendices, tables, diagrams, and maps are provided for the comprehensive documentation and understanding of the research, as well as for further deepening and expansion of the issues addressed by the study. This study highlights the importance of local government in the design and implementation of cultural policies. The book at hand can serve as a catalyst for the development of fruitful reflection on the role of cultural policy of local government in the field of social and regional development
