How do portable air conditioners work?

The operation of portable air conditioners does not differ from that of conventional air conditioners. Their main difference lies in their construction. While conventional air conditioners consist of two parts, the indoor and outdoor units, portable air conditioners integrate both units into a single device.

Additionally, they must expel air into the environment through a duct. For this reason, they come with a flexible hose that can be adapted to a window, balcony door, or even a wall with an opening.

Advantages of portable air conditioners:

  • Low purchase cost (compared to a conventional one)
  • No installation required by a technician
  • Ability to cool more than one room in the same house
  • Easy to transport

All air conditioners of this type are objectively mechanical mistakes. I happened to get this one.
I am writing the following to explain and ideally prevent you from wasting your money.

--EDIT 06-2024: I added the technical details of Models A and B (B is not introduced in Greece) for a better understanding of the futility.--

    Initial observations:
I have owned it since July '21
I conducted extensive tests for a whole month
I spoke with the seller and the inventor many times and asked for its replacement with a "regular" air conditioner and its withdrawal from the market. (of course, paying the difference)
The seller could not do anything. The inventor was very polite and helpful, but of course, it was impossible for them to admit that their product follows marketing policies and not engineering designs.

    Its major problem:
    -------------
In summary: It creates pressure in the room/space because it pulls huge amounts of air from the inside and throws it outside. At the same time, it does not renew the space with fresh air.
This means that if you place it in a regular room - and not a huge open space - you will find that it cannot cool or heat because air enters at high speed through openings and gaps (e.g. half-open door, poor window frame, or a small hole) due to the pressure. You will also hear a buzz from the air.
In a huge space, the same thing happens, the building compensates for the lost air through many small points, so it is not noticeable.

    In detail:
    -------------
Air conditioners usually have 2 units, one external and one (or more) internal, and there is a reason they are made this way. The external unit does all the "work" and after cooling or heating, it sends the air to the internal unit to recycle the room air and give it the right temperature. IT DOES NOT PULL AIR FROM OR TOWARDS THE ROOM. The external unit pulls air because it needs it to function properly. Then it leaves it back.

This mechanical mistake tries to put two watermelons under the same armpit. So it has combined the above 2 units into one. This means that you have the external unit inside your space. You also have a large pipe which is the exhaust - of the "external" unit. This pipe must go to the window to throw the air outside. The temperature of the expelled air is inversely proportional to the work the air conditioner does. If, for example, you have it in cooling mode, the expelled air is hot. And vice versa. So this air must definitely be expelled from the space. WHEN AIR IS EXPELLED FROM A SPACE, THE SPACE TRIES TO REPLACE IT.
If it fails, then we have pressure and in laboratory conditions even VACUUM!!!
If it succeeds, it means that our space constantly replaces the air that this disgrace of air conditioners is trying to "condition" with air of exactly the opposite temperature!!!

    Example:
I placed this shameless construction in a space ~25 square meters, I took the pipe out normally from an opening in the window and closed the door.
    The space was 32 degrees.
Cooling started. The space around it within a radius of 2 meters dropped to 27 within 30 minutes. The rest of the space... remained at 32!!!!
    HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE???
If you put your ear close to the door, you would hear the air struggling to enter the room. Naturally, after a while I opened a gap in the door because my ears started to hurt from the lack of air in the room.
Having the door open, a "gap" started to enter the room with incredible pressure, warm air from the rest of the house. It reached up to ~2 meters from the air conditioner, where it met the cold air and somewhere there was a thermal boundary.
You can't stay in this room.

And I haven't even talked about the noise!!!!
    What does all this mean?
That you just bought and installed in your room a .... EXTRACTOR!!!! which neither heats nor cools. Just like the one you have in your kitchen.
    Cheers!
I proceed to a normal review.

    PROS
+ It withstands wood. The exterior. I don't know about the interior anymore. I wish it would rot as soon as possible. I promise to recycle it and see if it's worth anything even after death.
It has wheels! (you can remove them and use them somewhere else)

    CONS
    - It doesn't cool, it doesn't heat. Its performance should not exceed that of an open fireplace. That is about 15% to 20%. So, 80% of the energy it consumes is wasted (it throws it out of the house!! How can you not love this miserable thing).
    - It makes a tremendous noise! Okay, I live in a very quiet location. If you don't intend to use it in a space that already has 60db by itself, then don't do it. You will go crazy. (Of course, if after all the above you really want to buy it, then you probably have nothing better to do and continue reading...) I would say that only if someone needs it for installation in an industrial space with a tent, located next to an airport and a need for continuous movement of air conditioning, then the purchase can be justified. When it reaches the desired temperature (I'm kidding, it NEVER reaches the desired temperature). When you close it, you feel a mental uplift. Suddenly you appreciate the space, the people upstairs who walk carelessly with their heels and hard heels. The grandma in the bathroom in the next apartment, right where you put the fig tree that started to wither from noise pollution.
    - The bass. Oh, the bass. They resonate with the couch, the window frame, and the lamp. It's a concert for the deaf.
    - It burns an incredible amount of electricity. Well, that's logical, with a 20% max performance the only way to "logically" burn is to use it as a fan. BE CAREFUL it doesn't burn more electricity than other electrical appliances proportionally, just because it can't do anything in terms of air conditioning, it works continuously!
    - It's portable. On paper! In practice, you put it once and throw it away. It's bulky and needs to be next to the air outlet. If it's not, you have to extend the exhaust hose. Which is a body of excessive heat or cold. So if you extend the hose to 2 meters, you have (for example in the summer) a hot 2-meter hose in your space. Lower the above performance by at least 5%.
    - You have to either make a hole in the wall or have a window that opens horizontally. IT DOESN'T WORK WITH ANY OTHER COMBINATION. Of course, it doesn't work anyway, but... for the theory. So to use it as portable, you have to wonder:
    - How many horizontally opening windows does my space have?
    - How many 100mm holes am I willing to open in my walls?
    - Why didn't I buy a regular air conditioner?

    AND THE BEST PART
    There is model B.
    What does model B have?
Model B has a second INTAKE hose. I write it and I almost cry. It will require 2 holes and an extra tube but this way we eliminate the problem of pressure! Of course, we draw hot (or cold) air from outside and possibly even hotter (or colder) from the neighboring tube that throws hot (or cold) air right next to it... but still... and the external unit of the "correct" air conditioner works with the same air.

The only air conditioners that have the same or similar construction are mainly circulating in America and are placed in the window. Half outside and half inside. After the above, I believe the reasons are obvious.

I will continue, maybe with an update if I find the courage.
Humor comes out as a natural reaction to the continuous ridiculous findings. My review could not be more serious. If you decide to buy this or any similar product, at least make sure to try the above somewhere, somehow.

*The 1 star is given for the support of the inventor and POSSIBLY for the construction (half of it) because after deciding that I bought from the bottom of the air conditioning chain and that I would be ashamed to look a potential buyer in the eyes if I decided to sell it to them even at a very low price, I only use it when I'm angry with something. I put on shoes and kick it hard. That's how I found the only advantage of this embarrassing construction. It can take a beating.

I bought it because I live in a rented apartment, I don't want to drill holes in the walls, I don't want to wait for a technician every time I need to connect/disconnect it, and to provide heating during winter in case the building doesn't turn on the radiators.
For now, I am using it for cooling, it is a 12,000 BTU unit in a 45 sqm apartment.
It effectively cools the house, but in the bedroom, I have placed a small fan to "circulate" the air because it doesn't cool it down as much as I want - it's just refreshing.
In the main area where I have it set at 20 degrees, anyone who visits the house freezes.
The noise is tolerable. (To understand, our kitchen extractor fan, which is not one of the quietest, makes more noise.)
It is not audible at night in the building, no one can complain about noise (I went outside the house and checked that the extractor fan can be heard but not the air conditioner).
You don't need to lay pipes, it has automatic water drainage.
It comes with a tube in the packaging.
You will only need a tube if you have a lot of humidity and the tank fills up quickly and can't evaporate it in time, or if you have set a significant temperature difference (e.g., outside temperature is 38 degrees and you want it to be 16 degrees inside) and it works hard.
I have been using it day and night for a month already and I monitored the electricity meter, it works fine, there is no significant difference in kilowatt-hours, so it is also economical, besides being A-class.
Because the instructions in the enclosed leaflet are not very detailed, I sent an email to the company and the next day a technician called me and explained the operation and gave me suggestions on how to handle it in different weather conditions.
The window kit is for a sliding window, but you can buy a kit for a casement window from a well-known chain of construction materials (I don't know if I'm allowed to mention the name, it's the company that trades construction materials with a green triangle in its logo).
It also has a dehumidification function (I saved myself from buying a dehumidifier).
For now, I am very satisfied with the machine and it has been very convenient for me.
    It's worth it.
One of the best purchases/investments I have made.

Ideal for those who do not want wall-mounted air conditioning.
I use it for cooling in rooms of 65sqm.
By closing the bathroom and one room, it cools the living room and the other room perfectly!
It comes with all the accessories for the extraction of hot (or cold) air, as long as the windows in your house are sliding.
You can't say it's silent, if you think that the external unit of an air conditioner is inside your house, but its noise is tolerable.

A good machine to avoid installing the air conditioner!! It makes noise but it is manageable! When I first got it, it made a lot of noise, but I spoke to the service and they replaced it immediately! The new one arrived, I installed it, and the noise is tolerable!!

I bought it for a 20 sqm room. The heating function works relatively quickly and well, BUT its major drawback is that the water (condensates produced in the process) does NOT drain from the upper outlet as it should, but instead accumulates in the internal collector, which fills up excessively fast, resulting in an error indication and the shutdown of its operation. Of course, I contacted customer service, sent it for inspection, and they returned it to me with a note stating that "it functions normally." I contacted technical support again, but they continue to claim that there is no problem. As a result, I had to place the air conditioner on two pieces of wood so that it can accommodate a water container because the lower outlet hole is too low. Scroutz does not allow me to mention the address of the "service" point, but it is the only one of this company in Athens, and I wanted to note that I would not consider them professionals.

Very good and I have changed quite a few, in the same space portable. Maybe the only thing worth it, The space it was placed in is a unified living room kitchen of 68 square meters and managed to lower the temperature by 3 degrees. In a 35 square meter bedroom, it lowered it by 5.5 degrees. Choose it comfortably. The noise is the only downside in all the fan's features!
