Description
The Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is a significant tool for exercising economic and, by extension, national policy, concerning any state with maritime coasts. Theodoros Karyotis was a pioneer in highlighting the importance of the EEZ for the Law of the Sea, especially for Greece. The author managed to introduce this new concept into public debate, as is the case with this edition. Unfortunately, persistent efforts to urge political leadership to take action, efforts that began under the governments of Andreas Papandreou, in which many others participated, did not bear fruit. It is characteristic that the Republic of Cyprus defined its own EEZ as early as 2004, gaining "points" in current international research on hydrocarbons. The same initiative of determining their national EEZ has already been undertaken by 138 coastal states.
The determination and declaration of the Greek EEZ is a crucial issue regarding the control of Turkey's aggression, which has continued for decades in the Aegean and in the wider Eastern Mediterranean region. In this analysis, a central role is played by the "war" with the maps of the various EEZs, which support in this Brief Introduction the documented presentation of the concept and history of the Exclusive Economic Zone, which is of great interest to us.
