With the main character being Isabella or Izabo of the Villehardouins, a historical figure, the central event being the occupation of the Frankish castle of Kalamata in 1293 by Greeks and Slavic peasants, and the historical backdrop being the turbulent period of the Frankish rule, Angelos Terzakis composes a chronicle of heroism and love, during the time of troubadours, crusaders, corsairs, and knights, in the first awakening of the soul of the new Hellenism in the 13th century.
