Description

The Diary is presented in three volumes:

Volume A 1938-1951 (408 pages), Volume B 1952-1959 (600 pages), Volume C 1960-1967 (448 pages), and is accompanied by approximately two hundred rare photographs. In the Introduction, the reader is referred to internet-accessible films of the era in order to cross-reference the text with the image.

For the first time, specific, detailed, and indisputable information about a figure of recent Greek history is brought to light, a figure who was both adored and hated more than anyone else, and for whom almost everything that has been said and written until now comes from rumors, without solid references to sources: Queen Frederica. The 'Diary of Queen Frederica', which is kept in the State General Archives in a series of 35 handwritten volumes, covers with almost daily recordings the majority of the queen's public and a portion of her private life over a thirty-year period (1938-1967). The author is the respective lady-in-waiting who accompanied the queen and recorded her activities at the end of each day, often with detailed descriptions and interesting snapshots that reveal the multifaceted and intense personality of Frederica and her relationship with the world. In several cases, it is evident to the reader of the manuscript that the recordings are made on unstable ships or moving trains. The actual text of the Diary is supplemented by documents from other folders of the S.G.A. - correspondence with services on various social issues, mostly welfare, as well as letters written by the queen herself (drafts are preserved). The goal of the publication is to publish a historical source of great significance that fills a gap in recent historiography and will serve as the basis for further scholarly studies.
