Description

Television is the dominant and most popular form of entertainment in almost all countries on our planet. In our daily lives, television is a point of reference and criticism on a permanent basis: from the daily press, magazines, radio to television shows, mass transportation, our homes; in other words, in the public sphere. However, television is mainly blamed for almost all the problems in our society. This book presents and examines the effects of television on modern society in an understandable way. It also analyzes issues that increasingly concern people and researchers regarding this medium. The main topics discussed are the frequency of violent depictions, the relationship between television and modern politics and politicians, the information we receive from television through either news broadcasts or (informative) "discussion shows," the relationship between television and justice and advertising. This study attempts to outline and record the effects on the audience and the changes that television has brought about in some important aspects of modern life. It considers television as the new common reference point, our new square and neighborhood. It points out that it is wrong to focus our criticism on the medium itself and overlook the way in which we have imposed its functioning. The uncontrolled commercialization and its side effects are not solely the result of the medium, but rather the new structure and function of television in the modern communication field.
