Description

This book provides an introduction to Statistics with an emphasis on hypothesis testing, probability, and simple linear regression. It also covers probability theory and descriptive statistics. The characteristic of the book is its focus on probability and applications from the field of economics and finance. Hypothesis testing and estimation are often presented in a fragmented and ad hoc manner in several Greek books and almost all statistics books for economists and business administration students in the English language. This book is an exception to the rule.

On the contrary, an effort is made to present these topics in a unified way within the framework of probability and the methodology of hypothesis testing based on the criterion of likelihood ratio. Also, Bayesian methods are an important part of statistics and econometrics, and I believe that one does not have a comprehensive understanding of classical theory unless they understand Bayesian statistics. In this sense, my goal is to prepare for econometrics courses with a comprehensive understanding of the logic of statistics rather than providing ready-made recipes for hypothesis testing in one or another specific case. Of course, with understanding the logic, I am sure that the reader will have the opportunity to see that, in the case of statistics, Holmes' rule mentioned above is confirmed.

Also, I tried to give a realistic application of statistical methods to real problems as much as possible. For this reason, I have emphasized applications with real data from the Greek economy and the Greek financial market. Another characteristic of the book is the emphasis given to the economic interpretation of concepts that are traditionally considered purely statistical, such as the central limit theorem, variable transformation, etc. These concepts are applied here to significant economic problems, and thus one has the opportunity to see that they have significant application in many areas of economics, especially in finance.
