Description

The texts that structure this book span a long period of modern Peloponnesian history, during which there is an alternation of dominant or political situations: in the later phase of the first Turkish rule (from the mid-17th century), in the period of the second Venetian rule (1685-1715), in the period of the second Ottoman rule (1715-1821) and finally in the period of the Struggle for Independence until the creation of the modern Greek state.
Thematically, these studies, most of which are based on unpublished archival material from Greek and foreign archives, cover a fairly wide research and historiographical field, with the main focus being the social and economic history of the Peloponnese over a period of about two centuries: issues related to the social, economic, demographic and religious consequences of the conquest on the local population, the demographic situation of certain areas, monasticism, the very important and crucial uprising of 1770 in Moria, piracy, the image that Peloponnesian memoirist-writers - fighters of 1821 formed for the Turks, the fate of the captives of the Revolution, and finally issues of a biographical nature concerning the local elite.
