Description

How is the relationship between Greece and Germany portrayed on entertainment websites? How do actors and singers talk about their childhood in Germany? How do a comedy series and a satirical show represent the roles of "Germans" in Greek television? How is German language learning promoted in language centers targeting Greeks who want to immigrate to Germany? How does a Greek immigrant woman in Germany share her experiences on social media?

The book examines constructions of Germanness in various aspects of mass culture discourse in crisis-ridden Greece. By using the term Germanness, reference is made to a broader notion than that of the country's image, encompassing a network of representations about the country, culture, and language, constructed in the public sphere in multiple ways, not only in "visible" texts (e.g. political and news discourse), but also in more common speech practices, where ideology often goes unnoticed. Moreover, this term reflects approaches to the study of national identity that are connected to discourse-analytical and constructivist traditions.

As the construction of (national) identities is a process of distinguishing the (national) self from the (national) other, a book about Germanness can only be a book about Greekness as well, especially in a period of economic recession, during which Greek identities are considered to be constantly "threatened" and reshaped.
