Description

Professor of Medical Physics, Mr. Kostas Kappas, and Associate Professor of Medical Physics-Informatics, Mrs. Kiki Theodorou, have significant and long-standing experience in the daily clinical applications of radiation in radiology, nuclear medicine, and radiation therapy for cancer patients.

The two scientists are also licensed radiation physicists in the field of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation after years of postgraduate studies. They are responsible for radiation protection at the University of Thessaly and the University Hospital of Larissa in matters related to general radiation protection of clinical, research, and educational activities, as well as industrial applications.

With the help of their scientific knowledge and clinical experience, they describe in a simple and understandable way the nature of radiation, how it is produced, how it spreads, and how it affects human tissues. They also describe the effects of radiation (through the daily life of a pregnant woman at home, at work, or in the general environment) on the developing embryo, critical weeks, symptoms, and precautions. They also describe the procedures for receiving pregnant women in the radiology and radiation therapy departments of hospitals, nuclear medicine departments, surgery, or wherever exposure to radiation is required, necessary preparations, controls, and methods to protect the embryo from unwanted exposure to radiation.

Finally, drawing from their experience, the authors convey a large number of characteristic questions from pregnant women or relatives regarding the risk that the embryo is exposed to from all forms of radiation and answer them, such as:

- If an abdominal CT scan or X-ray is performed by mistake, should an abortion be performed?
- Is magnetic resonance imaging dangerous for the embryo?
- Does tanning with a solarium affect my pregnancy?
- What are the most dangerous periods for the embryo to undergo radiographic procedures?
- Should a pregnant woman working with radiation be removed from her job?
- If one of the parents has been exposed to radiation in the reproductive organs before conception, how does it affect the embryo?
- If a family member of the pregnant woman has undergone a bone scan, is cohabitation with them dangerous?
- How long after a radiographic or radiation therapy procedure can a woman become pregnant?
- Am I at risk from the radiation of the television, microwave oven, or my laptop?
