Description

The book helps us realize how the Christian world is one and united, the one Christian Greek-Western world. Despite their differences, Gregory Palamas and Thomas Aquinas can "converse" comfortably. Anthropological proposals originating from one end of this world concern absolutely and the other end, which often already has a theological or philosophical sense or preparation.

The old dialectic of East-West no longer has the meaning it may have had and should be replaced by this internal relationship, which is naturally completely foreign to any form of assimilative homogenization of differences, where they actually exist. In this way (and only in this way) Orthodox theology returns to the modern ecumenical discussion - especially through the royal road, even after the Western "discovery" of the Greek Fathers, already in the past century.

This attitude and method is also opposed to the corresponding syndromes of marginalization of the Greek side of the Greek-Western theological world, visible in older but unfortunately also contemporary Western writers, mainly Roman Catholic, usually in the form of subordination of Greek Patristic theological production to alleged Western influences, with forced arguments, where suddenly Maximus the Confessor becomes a grateful student of ... Augustine, while Palamas is the least worshipper of Duns Scotus, etc. These are what I call "cultural wars" in this case, with a confessional disguise, which, however, break equally the depth, originality, and freedom of any genuine theological knowledge...

In any case, as prominent European thinkers have already pointed out, from Marion and Taylor to Caputo, Kearney, Lacoste, Milbank, Ward, or Pickstock, the theological sources of the Greek-Western itself promise exciting new perspectives for solutions to today's anthropological difficulties or impasses. What the above do not seem to know, however, is the possible contribution of the Greek theological side to this search - not always in opposition to Western efforts, but always with astonishing originality, creativity, and freshness.
