The present collective volume offers a general introduction to the Greek administrative system today. The authors examine public administration from a legal, comparative, historical, and administrative scientific perspective, describing and interpreting historical trends and contemporary developments in the administrative system. Specifically, the volume examines the constitutional foundations of public administration, its relations with political power, as well as its role in the stages of public policies and regulatory governance. The public sector, the government, the ministries, the bodies of public administration at central and regional level, and at the level of local self-government are presented. The institutions of administration control and the independent authorities are also discussed. Furthermore, the categories of public servants, recruitment systems, the civil service status, the career and mobility of employees are discussed. Finally, the cultural and structural-functional characteristics of public administration are analyzed over time, the organization, functioning, and personnel of administration are placed in a comparative perspective, and the initial reactions of administration to the Covid-19 pandemic are summarized. All chapters of the volume are written with special care so as to be accessible to readers, including non-legal ones, and to present and analyze issues that remain open in contemporary scientific research. Thus, the authors of the volume seek to inform and stimulate reflection on public administration for both students, who use it as a textbook, and the wider reading audience.
