Description

The October Revolution was a milestone of the 20th century. The discussions and conflicts it sparked were intense and universal, leaving no sphere unaffected. Equally significant were the subsequent developments, from Stalin's rise in the 1920s to the dissolution of the USSR.

These events, along with the apparent impasses and dangers in the era of neoliberal barbarism, raise questions such as: What factors allowed the Bolsheviks to successfully lead the revolution? Was the subsequent degeneration inevitable and a result of Bolshevism, contradicting Marxist theory? What positive possibilities of October were realized and what alternative possibilities existed to avoid negative outcomes?

The collection "October and Our Era" aims to provide some initial answers to these questions and to provide avenues for further research by making unknown sources accessible to the public. Situated within the Marxist, progressive tradition, the work is divided into three parts:
- Texts by Bolshevik leaders from the period 1917-24 about Lenin and various topics of the revolution: N. Bukharin, L. Trotsky, L. Kamenev, G. Zinoviev, K. Radek, A. Lunacharsky.
- Subsequent progressive testimonies and analyses: H. Laski, E.H. Carr, A. Einstein, A. Terzakis, B. Brecht, R. Fischer, E. Fischer, N. Khrushchev, M. Neumann, E. Mandel, J. Hansen & R. Monro, F. Claudin, G. Ioannidis, D. Sotiriou.
- Recent contributions by Marxist researchers: T. Mastrogiannopoulos, A. Kloke, E. Sichan, A. Blunden, A. Tsen, E. Pappa, O. Paschalinis, H. Kefalis, G. Tolios, S. Sayers.

The contributors to the volume generally agree in defending the work of October, criticizing Stalinist degeneration, and engaging in fruitful Marxist exploration of socialist prospects for the future. Their motivation was the realization of the need to combat the confusion of the times and expose efforts to extract a justification of capitalism or Stalinism from the events of the late 20th century, in order to understand the real dilemmas of our era.

On the threshold of the new century, when capitalism is undergoing its deepest crisis and neoliberal barbarism is spreading, interest in the history of the revolutionary, communist movement is revived. The October Revolution is a key milestone in this history. Its study can offer knowledge and inspiration for contemporary radical thought and action.
