Description

With the axes of traditional structures and functions of the past and the Western-modern example as a model, Greek society has moved through a historically unique continuous movement of social, economic, political, and cultural dislocations and reconstitutions. A difficult journey is proven as institutional dysfunctions, economic deficiencies, and cultural changes highlight its structural peculiarities and weaknesses.

In this book, as an introduction to the study of Greek society, an effort is made to depict and analyze, through the texts of 20 specialized scientists, the widest possible picture of its course from the establishment of the Greek state to the present day. Basic components of its formation and functioning are analyzed, allowing the reader to gain a comprehensive picture of its profile and to approach interpretively its contemporary functions and dysfunctions.

The thematic units analyzed, without exhausting the whole range of issues, cover both centuries (19th and 20th), in the same distribution, except for two special topics (the Cyprus issue and Greece in the European Union), including the analysis of social structures, the agricultural issue, political forces, the economy, foreign policy, daily life and the arts, culture, and the movement of ideas.
