Description

This book was first published in 2019. It is the only one in Greek literature that analyzes the Russian strategy of penetration and dominance in the Orthodox world. It focuses on Moscow's ambitions to "dethrone" the Ecumenical Patriarchate and seize its leadership. The research and writing were prompted by the "war" declared by Moscow against the Ecumenical Patriarch, due to his decision to recognize an autocephalous Church in Ukraine. The invasion of the country, which Russia insists on considering its "colony" both spiritually and politically, made many consider the book prophetic. At the same time, it imposed its updating. The medieval popular narrative of the "Third Rome" is now fueled by a national line of creating religious "colonies" of Moscow, with obvious political benefits. In Greece, since the early 2000s, a well-organized "hybrid war" has been raging, aiming to turn Greek society against the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the country's Western orientation. The author attempted, by studying the formation of Orthodoxy and the worldview of state and church in Russia, to understand how the superficial Russian "geopolitics of Orthodoxy" was born. The Russians remain captives of their fascination with their imperial past. But does their obsession with power ultimately undermine their influence in the entire Orthodox world? The attempt to impose with weapons in Ukraine has caused disgust in the Orthodox world, pushing it towards a painful - but necessary - introspection. With the ongoing invasion, one thing is clear: the boots and tracks of the invaders did not crush the Ukrainians, but the Russian grandiose idea of "leadership" in the Orthodox world.
