A never-ending division... Between two factions defined by the opposing side as "treacherous"... Which, however, until the tragic 1922 at least, constituted expressions of different interpretations of Greek "revisionist/liberating" grandiose ideas and nationalism... A division with a background that is certainly personal (the conflict of the "two Bs"), but also social, ideological, and economic aims and mentalities... A prolonged quasi-civil war, which left unimaginable and indelible hatred... And which led to judicial murders of "traitors," that is, political opponents. Completing my research for this book - the most laborious and, in my eyes, the most significant of all I have written - I was left with the question recorded in Winston Churchill's "war" Memoirs: "With all that they did to each other... And all that [they themselves] did to themselves... How did the Greeks survive?". T.D.
