The collective volume Silk and Purple proposes a journey into the world of Byzantine and post-Byzantine fabrics, through the exploration of different traditions that developed in the eastern Mediterranean, from late antiquity to the early modern period. The team of editors and authors of the volume, consisting of scholars with complementary interests and specializations, has created a diverse scientific canvas. This interdisciplinary spirit governs this volume, which aims to fill a crucial gap in existing Greek literature, offering an overview of both the most important local producers and the weavers who came from the West and the East to the bustling markets of Byzantium and Ottoman Greece. The goal is to highlight this particular aspect of our material culture, which is both significant and still unknown to the wider public. Within this framework, the various chapters unfold aspects of economic, social, religious, and artistic developments, which intertwine in the study of fabrics, just as the warp and weft of the loom intertwine to weave complex designs.
