Description

This manual is the first volume of a teaching method for children's or school choirs or group singing, for children in the first grades of elementary school (6-8 years old). It includes a collection of songs adapted to the vocal range and vocal abilities of children of this age. It is a comprehensive annual teaching method for children who are starting to sing in a choir (children's choir, conservatory, etc.) or in the school class, in the group singing lesson.

The method includes two books:
The teacher's book contains a choral anthology of methodically selected children's songs from Greece and abroad, translated into Greek. Each song is a teaching unit (or choral rehearsal) which includes the following parts: 1) general information about each song, 2) learning objectives, 3) teaching guide for the song, 4) instructions for the exercises in the student's book.

The student's book contains the corresponding choral repertoire and is accompanied by practical exercises that systematically teach music theory and basic principles of music reading for young children.

The main objectives of the method are to teach children:

- to use their voice correctly, producing a healthy head voice
- to recognize the notation of choral sheet music
- to read and not just memorize the songs taught
- to recognize rhythms - melodic patterns - musical forms
- to use their body in rhythm with the song, methods that important music educators, such as Dalcroze and Orff, have successfully incorporated into their teaching for children of this age.

The selected choral repertoire consists of Greek and foreign melodies, translated into Greek, so that they can be easily performed by young children. The songs are written in suitable tonalities for the vocal range of children aged 6-8 years, without exposing the voice to extreme ranges. The format of the songs is in unison, while rules and breaks are included throughout the flow of the method's lessons, which can be taught and presented in a concert, either in unison or in two groups, depending on the number and abilities of the children, as a first experience of "polyphony".

All the musical material of this edition has been practically applied by the author since 2009, in a model experimental choir teaching program for children of this age. The children are introduced to the program without prior audition or voice selection and are taught singing, basic principles of choral discipline, and elements of music reading, with the aim of integrating them into the polyphonic sections of the children's choir, after completing this teaching program.

The double-voice rules contained in the method function as the primary polyphonic experience for children, helping them approach more complex choral works in subsequent choir sections.

The repertoire of the selected songs varies, so that it can be presented in concerts with different thematic units throughout the school year, while there is also a small collection of Christmas songs suitable for the range and abilities of children's voices at this age.

This method is followed by the - under development - Volume II, for children aged 8-10, where the transition from unison and the simple rules of this volume to polyphony and choral works, both Greek and international repertoire, with their original lyrics.
