Small and convenient, the Apple USB SuperDrive connects to your MacBook Pro with Retina display, MacBook Air, Mac mini, or iMac with a single USB cable, while easily fitting into any bag. You can install software, play and burn CDs and DVDs, even double-layer DVDs.
Everything you need in an optical drive
Whether you are at the office or on the go, you can play and burn CDs and DVDs with the Apple USB SuperDrive. It is ideal when you want to watch a DVD movie, install software, create backup discs, and much more.
You can always have it with you
Just slightly larger than a CD case, the Apple USB SuperDrive fits comfortably in your luggage when you travel and takes up little space on your desk when you work.
The grandeur of simplicity
With the Apple USB SuperDrive, you will never have to worry about lost cables. It connects to your Mac with a built-in USB Type-A cable. There is no separate power adapter, and it works whether your Mac is plugged in or running on battery power.

First of all, let me say that like all Apple devices, this is also a high-quality tool. Also, as soon as I connected it, it worked perfectly. However, when I connected it to my MacBook Pro through the expensive HUB 2 that I use, which occupies two type C ports on my MacBook, it gave me a message saying "the USB device you are trying to connect requires power, connect it to a USB port!" I futilely connected the 96W power supply to the HUB. But as soon as I used a simple Samsung adapter and connected it to a port on the MacBook, it worked perfectly! What bothers me is the "clumsy" way of inserting the disk, while the eject function seems smoother! Only time will tell if the Chinese did a good job (made in China).
I will come back to report practical impressions. It records with a simple drag & drop from your folder to the icon that appears on your screen. Double-click on the icon and press record. If you put a written DVD inside and want to extract an image from there, simply drag & drop it onto the desktop or any folder you want. And here's where the good things end! The device is slow! Very, very slow! If you have to write 4.5GB files, do the laundry, iron, cook, eat, and take a look around. The recording will eventually finish. It doesn't make any noise! The slowness doesn't bother me at all. I want it to write critical files that can be lost if a hard drive crashes, but also to listen to my music directly from my high-quality CDs instead of compressed in MP3. The rating doesn't change!
Everything is fine with the Superdrive! Just to inform anyone interested, on my Macbook 12'' 2016, with the Satechi adapters, it doesn't work for me. However, when I tried the Apple adapter, it worked perfectly.
Beautiful and visually matches with Macbooks. Extremely lightweight and sturdy due to being made of aluminum. Moderate noise. Moderate speeds. Very expensive. I have had it for about 3 years and still haven't figured out if it takes mini discs. I have tried it on Win10 and it doesn't work. Overall, I am satisfied but... it's too expensive. 3/5.
